The Dream of an Hour focusses on the news of Mr.Mallard’s death. It tells the story of Louise Mallard's thoughts for an hour after she heard the news. Louise is a young and beautiful lady who has no children and lives with her husband. One day, Louise was suddenly told of the news of her husband's death. Louise immediately burst into tears. After crying, she entered the room herself, facing the window, with her blank mind, but gradually she began to feel the beauty of all kinds of things and eventually, she was full of the power of freedom. This freedom makes her feel pleasant and energetic. Just as she was full of enthusiasm and fantasies about the future, Mr.Mallard suddenly came back. Then Louise died of a heart attack.

In deeply reading and understanding the feminist ideology in The Dream of an Hour, a novel by Kate Chopin, the heroine's pursuit of freedom and awakening of female consciousness is explored. In the aspect of narration, the use of feminist perspective and shift of scene is discussed and in the aspect of literary style the use of contrast, irony and symbolism is probed. It is thought that The Dream of an Hour offers a perfect example for feminist ideology and writing in modern literature.

This paper is mainly focused on analyzing the image of Mrs.Mallard in The Story of an Hour to reflect the awakening of female consciousness.

Women's helplessness under social background

In the 19th century, the United States was a patriarchal society. Men were the mainstream group and women were marginalised groups under male oppression. In a patriarchal society, women are marginalised, they have no life except for their husbands and children, and even freedom is delusional. Chopin's freedom is regarded as an alternative and anti-traditional, Women are bound by society, men and themselves. Women are forced to aphasia in marriage, even in the face of death, and to play the role what a society needs. Such as Mrs.Mallard, who is uncommunicative in life and used to not being hearkened. In the face of her husband's death, people look forward to seeing her rightful expression of grief. In the face of her husband's integrity, people deservedly take in that she was dead for excessively ecstasy.

Mrs.Mallard's inner world was ignored, and people paid more attention to events than to herself. She was moulded as an angel and a representative of housewife, but her heart was oppressed and bound. The contradiction between her heart and reality forced her to hand over the right to speak.

Her husband's death gave her a chance to reborn, which made her feminist consciousness woke up instantly. But society restrained and oppressed it in an all-round way, so it could not be seen by the world. Therefore, Mrs.Mallard put herself in an undisturbed room to strengthen her belief by constantly repeating "freedom", which gave herself courage and hope from the inside. It’s a breakthrough and a feat, but it can only be expressed in that small room, which is extremely ironic. It also highlights Mrs.Mallard’s  helplessness and humbleness in society and family. In the meantime, it also contains Kate Chopin’s, an independent women, deep compassion to women like Mrs.Mallard.

The awakening of female consciousness

Mrs. Mallard awakened feminist consciousness after hearing her husband's death. After grief, she longed for the freedom from dissolution of marital oppression. However, her husband's safety instantly suppressed her hope and the full release of feminist consciousness. Death did not bring her relief, but made her aphasia again. People created an image of her who died with joy. Mrs. Mallard's awakening of self-awareness and the change of psychological state were based on the premise of her husband's death, that is, the collapse of patriarchy, so her yearning for freedom could only be a yearning, not a reality at that time. This is a tragedy, which also condenses the helplessness and misfortune of women in marriage under the patriarchal system and reflecting the social situation of low status of women at that time. It also reflect women's yearning for liberation, freedom and independence.

Through the description of women's pursuit of freedom in The Story of an Hour, Chopin expressed women's desire for freedom, reflecting the oppressed social and family status of female groups in the 19th century, and promoting the awakening of women's consciousness. But more importantly, Chopin also expressed the hidden worries behind women's pursuit of freedom, which precisely reflected Chopin's insight into human nature and her prediction of social development.

conclusion

The Story of an Hour full of obvious sarcasm and black humour. The writing style is natural and smooth, and the writing method is sophisticated and mature. The length is short but concise, and has a very high artistic level. According to the story, doctor diagnosed that Mrs. Mallard died of excessive joy, but only readers who understood the ups and downs of her heart would realise that the cause of her death was not ecstasy, but the despair of the new freedom; it was not a heart attack, but the awakening of herself. Mrs.Mallard was shaped as the embodiment of ideals and beauty. Chopin placed her own social ideals in Mrs.Mallard. However, at the end of the 19th century, in the established society of male-centred words, such ideals could not be realised, so their tragic endings could not be avoided. This shows that Chopin has no illusions about society, and her criticism is thorough and destructive.
